Headed out to play the sports you love? Numerous people with hearing aids enjoy golf, tennis and other outdoor activities. Don’t worry about your hearing aids while working on your backswing or chip shot. Just follow these tips.

Protect from perspiration

Playing sports such as tennis or golf means you are physically active. That’s good for your body and good for your mind. It also means a good amount of sweat. Make sure you use the proper accessories to protect your hearing aids from perspiration.

  • Take a few headbands: Wearing a headband while you exercise will absorb some sweat as fast as you create it. By wearing a headband you can stop sweat before it reaches your hearing aids. There are even special sweatbands made to fit over hearing aids. Hearing aid sweatbands are worn over your behind-the-ear style hearing aid. These little hearing aid sweatbands are worn in addition to your regular sweatband and give additional protection to your hearing aids when you work up a sweat on the courts or on the links.
  • Use a dehumidifier: Put your hearing aids in a drying box at night. These boxes contain either a desiccant or an ultraviolet light that removes moisture. They can dry in the places you can’t reach. If you live in a humid environment, you might want to use one of these nifty devices every night to dry moisture and earwax while you sleep.

Clip it on

While golf or tennis aren’t contact sports, you can jostle your hearing aids loose on the golf cart or if you run into your partner during a doubles game. Both are abrupt movements that can dislodge your hearing aids.

The truth is no one plans on losing their hearing aids. But savvy athletes plan for the unexpected. They secure their hearing aids with sport clips. Just attach one part to your golf shirt or tennis shirt and the other part to your hearing aid. No matter how aggressive you play, if your hearing aid comes lose you won’t lose it. It will also keep your hearing aid from hitting the court and breaking.

Plan for cleaning

Active individuals who wear hearing aids should ensure they’re cleaning them properly each and every night. Things like sweat or extreme temperatures can damage the tiny components of a hearing aid, so it’s crucial to properly care for them. Refer to your audiologist for any tips and tricks when it comes to the daily maintenance of your hearing aids. Additionally, make sure you’re having your hearing aids professionally cleaned by your audiologist at least twice a year.
