WAX BUILDUP AND REMOVAL

Definition

Cerumen, also known as earwax, is a secretion of the ear in a colored wax form.

Causes and Symptoms

There are a multitude of reasons as to why earwax (cerumen) builds up. Main causes are from inflammation in the body, autoimmune disease(s), sinus infections, anatomical blockage (narrowed ear canal and/or injury), skin disease (eczema), overgrowth of hair in ears, wearing hearing aids, and using cotton swabs (Q-tips). Symptoms of earwax buildup include earaches, the feeling of ear fullness (plugged ear), ringing and/or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus), decreased hearing, and dizziness.

How it Affects Day-to-Day life

The discomfort that cerumen buildup causes can be extreme and should be removed by an ENT physician. If you have severe wax buildup, Tejas would be glad to remove it regularly for you!

How Tejas Removes Cerumen (Earwax)

Tejas Providers remove earwax by using a microscope and fine cerumen spoons. If there is a significant buildup of wax in the ear, Dr. Tamez and our Nurse Practitioners may need to gently suction the wax. We do not use water irrigation to remove cerumen.

We are passionate about comprehensive treatment at Tejas and do a full evaluation of the ears in addition to the wax removal. If the wax is too hardened to remove at the time of visit, we will prescribe ear drops to soften the wax and have it removed at the follow up.
